Happy what (I hear you say)???  Yes, April 26 is World Intellectual Property day!

The event gets its date from the date on which the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was founded in 1970.  As far as I can tell from the WIPO archives, this has been an annual event since at least 2001.  There are a very impressive array of events occurring around the world to increase understanding of intellectual property issues generally.  To find an event near you, Google has a World IP Day 2013 map showing events in every country together with a short description of each.

By far and away, my favorite event is the 30 second infomercial competition being co-sponsored by the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru).  If you are unfamiliar with the nation of Brunei (as admittedly was I), it is a small country (population of about 400,000) completely surrounded by and on the coast of Malaysia.  The grand prize for the infomercial competition is BND$1,000 (about US$800).  If you were hoping to submit your own infomercial, I’m sorry to report that it is too late.  The deadline for submissions was April 15.  But hopefully they will post the winners online so we can see what they came up with!
